St. Johns County played a significant role in securing funding for this project through an application submitted to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for HUD Disaster Recovery funds after Hurricane Matthew. The County was awarded grant funding, of which $30 million was allocated to affordable housing. The 132-unit San Marcos Heights Housing Complex was partially funded directly from that grant.
